Email your Senators: Demand the Senate repeal the 2002 Iraq war authorization
It's been 20 years since the disastrous U.S. invasion of Iraq.
We're in a critical moment to finally repeal the 2002 Iraq Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) and there's a large bipartisan effort on Capitol Hill poised to make this happen right now.
The 2002 AUMF authorized war against Saddam Hussein's regime in Iraq – allowing George W. Bush to invade Iraq. This outdated war authority is unnecessary for ongoing military operations, but as long as it remains, it can be used and abused by this or future administrations. Most recently, the 2002 Iraq AUMF was used in January 2020 by the Trump administration to justify the assassination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, which Congress never authorized, the UN concluded as "unlawful," and brought the U.S. dangerously close to war with Iran.
We need to put an end to our forever wars and take these outdated war authorities off the books once and for all.
Biden has indicated support for Sen. Tim Kaine's bipartisan bill S.316 that would repeal both the 2002 and 1991 Iraq Authorizations for Use of Military Force.
There is a lot of momentum, and this is our best opportunity to repeal this authorization. We have the votes to finally repeal these outdated war authorities that have been used not just to make possible the Iraq War that began 20 years ago today, but literal decades of militarism and human rights violations.
The House has previously passed this provision. Now, we just need the Senate to act.
A Senate vote on the final bill is expected to happen as early as this week.
This would be the first-ever floor vote on repealing the Iraq War authorization by the Senate.
